If there was any doubt, this is the problem
The wall turned out to be quite a curious construction. It was 1/4" plywood covering 3/4" tounge-in-groove cedar planks. Pretty wild. It smelled really dank when I took the plywood off, but the cedar smelled pretty great when I cut into it a bit.
